The prompt notebook

Conversation ideas that leave room for your imagination.

The best opening message gives a chat something concrete to do. Use these fictional prompts as starting points, then change the details until the conversation feels like yours.

A simple recipe for a better opening

Give your first message three ingredients: a setting or subject, the tone you want, and the next small action. “Let’s talk about music” is workable. “You’re a fictional record-shop owner; ask me about one song I love, then suggest a listening theme” creates a much clearer exchange.

The examples below are illustrative prompts, not recorded conversations or promises about a product’s responses. A system may interpret them differently, so adjust as you go. Keep personal details fictional when you can.

For a little creative escape

1. The observatory after closing

A quiet fictional scene
“We are two fictional night-shift astronomers. The observatory is quiet, and an unusual light appears on the horizon. Describe one detail, then ask what I think it is. Keep the mood curious rather than frightening.”

Change the location to a lighthouse, library, or train carriage. Naming the mood prevents a mystery from becoming a horror story when that is not what you wanted.

2. The tiny travel journal

World-building in small steps
“Let’s invent a town that does not exist. Start with its name, one local tradition, and a café. Ask me to choose what we explore first. Keep each reply under four sentences.”

A response-length instruction makes it easier to participate instead of reading a long monologue. Add one detail of your own after each turn.

3. A story told in objects

Collaborative storytelling
“Help me create a gentle short story using a blue umbrella, a handwritten map, and an old camera. Give me two possible opening scenes and let me choose one.”

Specific objects give the story texture. Asking for a choice keeps your decisions central to the narrative.

For everyday interests

4. The one-song conversation

A hobby conversation
“Play a fictional music enthusiast. Ask me about a song I enjoy and what feeling it brings to mind. Discuss the mood without quoting lyrics or assuming personal facts about me.”

You can swap music for a favorite film, a landscape, or a hobby. Avoid treating suggested facts or recommendations as verified information.

5. A make-believe weekend

Low-stakes planning as play
“Let’s plan an imaginary weekend in a fictional seaside town. Our budget is modest and the pace is relaxed. Offer two activities at a time, and ask which I prefer.”

Keeping the destination fictional lets you explore tastes without sharing travel plans, location, or schedules. For real travel, verify opening hours and costs independently.

6. An enthusiastic beginner

Explain an interest
“Pretend you are a friendly beginner who wants to understand my hobby. Ask one simple question at a time. Let me explain, then summarize what you understood.”

This reverses the usual role. Instead of asking the AI to be an authority, you can use the exchange to practice describing something you enjoy.

For gentle conversation practice

7. The first introduction

A fictional rehearsal
“Let’s rehearse introducing ourselves at a fictional book club. Be friendly and ask one question. After three exchanges, give one specific suggestion about clarity, without rating my personality.”

Keep the feedback tied to observable wording. An AI’s response is not a reliable assessment of your social ability, and real people may respond differently.

8. A thoughtful disagreement

Practice a respectful exchange
“Let’s have a friendly fictional debate about whether a story is better with a clear ending. Take a different view, acknowledge one point I make, and keep the discussion respectful.”

Choose a harmless subject. Practicing with a fictional character can be fun, but do not use a simulated argument as proof of what another person will think.

When a prompt needs a course correction

If a response misses the mark, identify one change rather than restarting everything. Try “Use a calmer tone,” “Ask one question before continuing,” or “Let’s leave that topic and return to the café.” Concrete instructions are easier to test than “Be better.”

If the conversation keeps crossing a boundary, end it. A successful session does not need a dramatic ending; it can simply be a few enjoyable exchanges. Read the AI companion guide for a fuller approach to tone, boundaries, and balance.
